Recycling and soil protection are becoming increasingly important in motorsport competitions. In the specific case of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) — the global governing body for motorcycle sport — everyone involved, from riders and teams to organizers, must adopt sustainable practices to protect the environment.
These obligations are set out in the FIM Environmental Code and in the Sporting Regulations of the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), which define clear rules for waste management, biodiversity protection, and pollution prevention.
One of the mandatory measures is the use of environmental mats beneath all competition vehicles and generators. These mats feature an absorbent upper layer and an impermeable base, preventing oil or fuel from contaminating the ground and water. They are used in service areas, refueling zones, and vehicle washing areas.
In addition, used oils must be collected in appropriate containers and sent for recycling. Dumping any liquids on the ground is strictly prohibited and may result in fines for non-compliance.
The FIM also encourages the recycling of tyres, filters, and other waste, requiring organizers to provide suitable containers throughout event areas.
A leading international example of these best practices is the bp Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal, which has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability — fully aligned with the high standards set by both the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM).
